Scotty Pippen Jr. Scouting Report (Vanderbilt Guard)

Scotty Pippen Jr. is currently in his sophomore season at Vanderbilt University. Vandy is expected to finish dead last in the SEC Conference, which they did last year despite having NBA draft picks Aaron Nesmith and Saben Lee. Pippen racked up the third most minutes on Vandy (coached by Jerry Stackhouse) and looks to build upon the strides he made his freshman year. And yes, this is the son of NBA Legend Scottie Pippen. And no, they don’t have the same deep voice. I also have no clue why their first names are spelled differently. Let’s get into the scouting reports.

Strengths:

  • Good handles
  • Great floor facilitator, a threat with the ball in his hands.
  • Slowly becoming an elite level passer
  • Can drive through contact and score at the rim
  • Toughness
  • Hard worker and very driven individual
  • Student of the game

Weaknesses

  • Inconsistent jumpshot
  • Below-average on-ball defender
  • A little undersized at 6 foot 1, 170 lbs

Bottom Line:

As of right now, Scotty is a very good player, but he hasn’t done enough yet to separate himself from the rest of the guards in the country. He needs to improve his shooting, especially from deep, as well as become better on the defensive end. He can shoot and hit from deep, but he needs to become more of a knockdown shooter. He is just too streaky in this area at this point.

His father Scottie Pippen grew about 7 inches in College, despite entering at 6 foot 1. If Pippen Jr. can get a similar genetics bump and grow like that he will become an elite player. For now, I think he is a likely late second rounder in the NBA draft when he enters.
